Lest We Forget WWII Re-Enactment
| |
Returning by popular demand, this special event created by Lest We Forget and performed by WWII re-enactors from all over the country, brings back more of what you enjoyed in 2008 and 2009.
Friday, June 29th, re-enactors representing allied and enemy forces, set up bivouacs at the Southwest Michigan Regional Airport. Friday evening will feature a military vehicle parade with landing craft, motorcycles, jeeps and trucks, humvees, classic cars of the 30s and 40s, and aircraft flying cover through Benton Harbor and St Joseph.
Saturday morning, take your place on the sand or pier at St. Joseph’s Tiscornia Beach. The event will start at 0945 hours with a parachute drop of the American flag, followed by a B-17 fly-over simulating a bomb run. The excitement builds as we wait for the full-scale amphibious assault of the dukws, gators and Higgins Boat delivering our troops to storm the beach for the European Beach Invasion. After an intermission featuring WWII-era music, the Pacific Invasion takes place and will be followed by a re-enactment of the Iwo Jima flag-raising, to be witnessed by you and Medal of Honor recipient Hershel Williams, who lived through the real event!
In the afternoon, the action moves to the airport with vehicle and plane displays, fly-bys, parachute jumpers, weapons demonstrations, the 20th Century Military Museum displays, and presentations by Medal of Honor recipients. Don’t miss the demonstration of the WWII Flame Thrower that Hershel “Woody” Williams used on Iwo Jima.
Aircraft will vary from the Korean Bell Bubble Chopper to the Vietnam Medevac 369 to Warbirds and finally to the B-17, B-25 and C-47 from the Yankee Air Museum. Rides in military aircraft will be available. These rides will vary in price from $30 to $425 depending on the aircraft. Check the Lest We Forget website for information.
The Chow Hall staffed by the Experimental Aircraft Association, will be serving breakfast and dinner chow. Saturday evening you are invited to the hangar to join the re-enactors in WWII-era dress and dance the night away to the sounds of the 40s when swing was king!
In the morning, pancakes will be flipping in the hangar as the EAA feeds you and the troops. Following Sunday's inspirational field church service by Hershel “Woody” Williams at 0930 hours, witness ground battles at 1200 hours and visit what you may have missed on Saturday, including the National Guard climbing wall and Fort Knox simulators. Take time to walk through the bivouacs and chat with re-enactors whose meticulous dress and demeanor are astonishing as they bring history to life.
Prior to the weekend event, the surrounding towns will show their patriotism by flying their American flags at home, setting the mood for the weekend event. More information and final event times are available at www.LestWeForgetUSA.org
